Interview with the Illustrator
Today I had a FaceTime chat with Erica Sorg.
Erica shared that illustrating a children’s book has been a dream of hers. She remembered her mom reading to her and enjoying the variety of artwork in the books as well as the story. She remembers thinking it would be fun to do the illustrations for a book someday.
Buffy: Now that you have illustrated Bubbles Away, what was the hardest part of the process?
Erica: The hardest part was to just start. I would envision the picture done, and this could become overwhelming. The Lord taught me to surrender the results to Him. Instead I began to focus on the next step. As I practiced this, I had joy and freedom as I created each spread.
Buffy: What was the easiest part of the process?
Erica: Working together and having flexibility in the timeline of completing the project. Also being trusted with the ideas that I had for Bubbles Away.
Buffy: Are you excited about the next book?
Erica: Yes, I am excited. As I was illustrating Bubbles Away I used photos to help with Weebit and MawMaw but other parts I was able to use my imagination to complete the picture. This was a process that I have not done before, I found I enjoyed being able to implement this in the process.
The next book is going to give me even more opportunity to use my imagination in creating the illustrations. I am also excited to try out a mixed medium style for the next book.
Buffy: As a children’s book illustrator what do you want people to know about you?
Erica: God works in the daily little things, the small steps and His timing is perfect. Through this journey of painting and creating He continues to remind me that most important is our relationship with Him and people. As a home school Mom, I want to keep this in mind and to continue to connect with my children’s hearts. I appreciate that Bubbles Away reflects a connection of relationship between Weebit and her MawMaw and the trust they have in their Creator.
